Episode 230: Everything is better with community…fridges, with Christa
What does it look like to build systems of care outside of traditional capitalistic systems?
An interview with Amanda Lee McCarty on the Clotheshorse podcast.
For the past four years, a small but mighty free fridge/resource stand in my front yard has become a vital mutual aid hub—serving thousands of neighbors and transforming my relationship with community and the systems we can build to better support each other.
I had the honor of sharing this story with Amanda on Clotheshorse (one of my favorite podcasts). We talked about the radical potential of free fridges and how small, consistent acts of care can disrupt extractive systems and grow collective resilience.
Give it a listen in if you're thinking about what it means to show up for your community—especially as the safety nets we were told to rely on continue to unravel.
During podcast we discussed:
꩜ How to get a fridge started in your community. We’re going to cover all of the nuts and bolts: electric bills, permits, the best kind of fridge to use, how it all works.
꩜ The best things to stock in a community fridge (and what to skip)
꩜ The impact–both personal and community-wide–of resources like this
꩜ And what I've learned along the way about humans, community, and the importance of compassion and care.
